Cornell Bitcoin Adoption Index — 2026 Edition
A 25-country study of bitcoin awareness, ownership, understanding, and trust, conducted by the Tech Policy Institute at Cornell University's Jeb E. Brooks School of Public Policy, with support from the Human Rights Foundation. Nationally representative online samples of 25,880 adults were surveyed between December 2024 and March 2025.
Headline findings
- Bitcoin awareness: 90.1% of all respondents have heard of bitcoin.
- Current ownership: 13.2% of all respondents currently own bitcoin; 30.3% have ever owned it.
- Knowledge: 13.0% of those aware of bitcoin know its supply is capped at 21 million.
- Financial freedom: 46.7% of those aware of bitcoin agree it increases their financial freedom, rising to 79.4% among current owners.
- Self-reported knowledge of bitcoin averages 4.4 out of 10; for stablecoins, 5.4 out of 10.
- Stablecoin awareness: 34.2%. Ethereum: 48.0%.
